Later this week, India will celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. On that day when the assassin, Nathuram Godse, fired at Gandhi from point blank range, few journalists were present. They knew that Gandhi had been shot at close range and had probably been struck by some of the bullets. These five words which first informed the world said everything logical but stopped short of pronouncing any status on Gandhi’s health. Eventually it was known that Gandhi had succumbed to the bullet wounds; but then that was another story.
